Maritime heritage in minature
Come and view the mini International Fleet Review at close quarters without going to sea! With more vessels for review than the full size versions, the model boating area in the Chain Test House will be one of the largest land based exhibitions ever seen at the Festival!
Now that the floor area of the Chain Test House is fully allocated we can announce some of the exhibits. Perhaps not surprisingly a very large number of warships of all eras, countries and scales will be making there way to Portsmouth (creating a major berthing challenge!!). A very popular display at previous Festivals and not to be missed this year with new models, is one man's lifetime of work building international warships using just matchsticks and matchboxs. During the International Festival of the Sea in 2003 a member of the ships company of HMS Tyne supplied Philip Warren with enough information to build a matchstick model of the vessel which will be on display here at Portsmouth (see if you can find it!)
Many dioramas will be shown including one depicting the D day landings at Arrowmanches in 1944 and a spectacular working display of the waterfront on the Algarve in Portugal (very close to Trafalgar!). Another major display will be of Ships in Bottles including HMS Victory and SS Great Britain, Golden Hind etc with demonstrations explaining the mystery of how they get the models in the bottles! With other Maritime Heritage vessels on display including Thames Sailing Barges, Coastal Forces craft, Inland waterways, Ferries, Fishing, Tugs, Tankers, Tall ships and more. (Look out for the stunning model of the first Steam Powered vessel the Charlotte Dundas).
An interactive area will offer the opportunity to pilot Radio Controlled Vessels and sail a yacht around part of the Isle of Wight on a computer simulator!
Various methods of constructing ship models will be demonstrated including conventional wood planking, plastic sheet, cardboard and matchsticks.
