The 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 2005 provides the
inspiration for hundreds of celebrations and special events across the
United Kingdom under the SeaBritain 2005 banner for a national Year of the Sea.
The major highlights are undoubtedly the
International Fleet Review on June 28th, at Spithead — the first since 1977 — followed
immediately by what will be Europe's largest maritime extravaganza, the International Festival of the Sea, in Portsmouth.
The unprecedented national and international Festival fleet drawn together for these two
showpiece events will give visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy and admire a range of
vessels never before seen in home waters.
The International Festival of the Sea will choreograph dynamic displays on land and sea,
capture public imagination with an inter-active exhibition area, amuse and engage with colourful historic street scenes depicting life
in Nelson's era. Each day will feature a specially commissioned music programme catering for all tastes, culminating each evening in arena
and stage shows.
The International Festival of the Sea runs from June 30th - July 3rd
and combines the flair, vision, expertise and resources of the Royal
Navy and Festival Management Ltd, the creators of the Festival
concept first unveiled in Bristol in 1996.
IFOS, as it is affectionately known in Portsmouth, consistently
attracts over 250,000 attendees including service personnel, guests,
pass -holders, performers, entertainers and crews from the festival fleet.
As the highlight of a unique year, celebrating our abiding national
love affair with the sea, The International Festival of the Sea 2005
will set and fulfil the highest of standards.
We feel sure as sponsors, exhibitors, corporate partners or simply
as visitors; you will want to join us for four of the most exhilarating
days of this exciting year.
